Aftermarket bumpers can be a stylish and functional addition to your vehicle.  While some bumpers are aimed primarily at increasing style and individuality, most are designed to also benefit the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle.  The right bumper for your particular needs will be a function of your personal style preferences and your purpose for your vehicle.  A lip spoiler that runs along the lower lines of the bumper is a popular addition to street cars as are complete bumper replacements.  Track cars may replace their factory bumper, add a lip, and also add a splitter to help increase front downforce.

Bumpers are complete replacements for the factory piece and are manufactured from a number of materials.  Fiberglass, polyurethane, and carbon-fiber are common materials used in bumper fabrication.  All of these materials are suitable for bumper construction and all are similarly resilient.  Obviously any bumper, factory pieces included, will crack or break if involved in an impact.  Aftermarket bumpers are no different.  However, some polyurethane bumpers are noted to be more adept at absorbing impacts from scraping or rubbing as is common in exceptionally low vehicles.

Lip spoilers are an especially popular and cost-effective upgrade.  A lip spoiler functions as an add-on to the lower portion of your stock bumper.  Because they function as an addition to the stock bumper they allow the car to retain a clean-OEM look while adding a sporty flair to the front end of the vehicle.  They also require much less paint and body work compared to bumper replacements which can help to keep the overall cost of the modification low.

Splitters are a track-minded front end modification.  Splitters are designed to generate downforce on the front end of the vehicle.  The additional downforce from a splitter will help improve front traction during high speed driving.  When choosing a splitter careful attention should be paid to ensure that the vehicle’s aerodynamics are balanced front to rear.  This typically means that a splitter on the front end should be combined with a wing on the rear of the car.  However, vehicles that exhibit bad front end push can benefit from the use of a modest splitter without the addition of a rear wing.
