Most vehicles are equipped with “narrowband” sensors from the factory. These sensors are meant to perform only one duty, which is to notify the ECU if fuel mixture is too rich or too lean. These can be thought of like an on/off switch. A wideband oxygen sensor calculates, in real time, the air/fuel ratio of the engine. The information collected from a wideband oxygen sensor is a key tool used by engine tuners. Precise air/fuel ratio measurement allows the tuner to make effective adjustments to create an ideal tune for the vehicle’s ECU. The closer the oxygen sensor is to the motor, the more accurate the reading. A good distance is usually about 18 inches from the engine – any closer and heat could damage the sensor.
