Performance Brakes

Performance brakes

Braking is a critical component of any vehicle's performance. Although most goals revolve around improving acceleration, it takes quality brakes to help you arrive to a safe stop. As acceleration is increased, we strongly recommend ensuring that your brakes are up to the task of slowing down your newly found horsepower. Often times, a vehicle's original brakes are insufficient for the factory level of power. Depending on your driving style, brake upgrades may be recommended even before looking for more power.

Many brake upgrades are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. In many cases, slight changes over factory equipment can make drastic improvements. Many brake components, such as rotors, pads, and fluid, are consumable items anyways, requiring replacement at fairly regular intervals. By replacing your worn factory equipment with improved aftermarket items, you can not only increase your stopping power, but usually save money over expensive items from your dealership.

There can be many warning signs of brake fatigue or failure. Many indicators are easily noticed while braking, such as squealing, vibrations, or pulsations. These are often your first clues of worn brake pads or warped or worn rotors. Other warning signs can be less noticeable. For example, most factory brake pads cannot withstand the high heat generated from high speed stops or repeated braking sessions over an extended period of time. It is worth noting what your brakes are and are not capable of well before it becomes an emergency situation.

Once you have established your starting point, which will vary from each car and specific driving style, it is time to decide how to move forward with your upgrades. Brake pads are the most commonly changed item. Whether you are looking for a factory-replacement type pad, or something specifically for high temperature track use, there is likely a variety of solutions available. It is not required to replace your rotors every time you replace your brake pads, but your particular wear characteristics may dictate otherwise.

Brake fluid is an important item that is often overlooked. Some manufacturers offer specific guidelines for brake fluid changes, but you may find it to be easier to flush at the same time as changing your brake pads. While you're at it, adding a set of stainless steel brake lines will help increase the firmness of your brake pedal. All of these aforementioned items can be purchased in combined packages for increased savings over factory equipment.

Replacing individual factory components is a cost-effective method of slightly increasing performance and improving upon items that require regular maintenance anyways. In many applications, the factory caliper and rotor size setup simply cannot accommodate for the high speeds or extended usage that your modified vehicle is now seeing. By replacing the entire factory brake system with a typical big brake kit, you drastically increase the stopping power and can even reduce the amount of weight per corner. Big brake kits offer many advantages, but are not necessary for every particular use.

Whether your car simply requires some fresh brake fluid and new front pads, or a complete overhaul of larger calipers and rotors all around, we are always happy to help determine which solution suits you best.
